My mom, confidence and a little ego
Discover how my mom's timeless advice shaped my unique fashion philosophy, emphasizing confidence and embracing individuality. This is the foundation of Biek's Closet.

My first fashion teacher was my mom
My first real fashion teacher wasn’t a designer. It was my mom. She has this crazy good eye for clothes. She can look at an outfit for two seconds and know exactly what works and what doesn’t. When I was younger, she would point things out quietly: why a coat looked good, why a color fit someone, why a simple outfit still felt special.

"You have to be confident and have a little ego to wear something. Then it will look good."
She always told me one thing that stuck in my head: "You have to be confident and have a little ego to wear something. Then it will look good." At first I thought she just meant “dress bold.” But now I get it. She meant: Don’t be scared to wear what you like. Don’t wait for other people to approve it. If you feel good in it, that’s the whole point.

Embracing individuality: from Leiden to the USA
That sentence is basically the base of my style. It’s also the base of this blog. I don’t want fashion to feel scary or super serious. I want it to feel like: “This is me. Take it or leave it.” Moving from Leiden to the USA strengthened this approach, as I wanted to be different from everybody else around me and embrace my unique flair.
